Sat in bed and drew this with markers the other night. Slacking on the art front recently! Had been a while since I used markers.

Some lanterns I drew last week, based on various photo references, improvised and reimagined in places.

Another real media dragon, this one using markers and acrylic!

Haven't worked with real media in a while, so here's a dragon. Mixed media on stretched paper, including some tissue paper and gel mediums for texture, acrylic and watercolour paint and watercolour pencils. I need to do some observational studies of animal bodies as I'm often clueless with how to join a head to anything. I also need to consider backgrounds more often, which I have been pushing to do with digital. This is available as a print on Etsy.

I had hoped to get this finished by Halloween, but haven't had a chance, so here's a wip for now.

Wanted to try sketch painting by blocking in shapes and tone instead of line. Came out kind of cool?

Not sure if I like this or not... His face just doesn't feel right. Kinda creepy? Walibi is a lot harder to draw than Squad.

I started throwing colours on a sketch of Brooklyn and wasn't really feeling it, so abandoned it. I might go back to it though. I was having trouble getting depth and interesting textures - maybe I was just off that day. Looking back it looks fine though really.

I know this is really simple and underworked, but I'm really proud of myself for capturing such hard man made forms of modern buildings and those sky colours. Digitally painted from this reference photo.

100th post this year! 

Matching 2010 in post count, so this year is set to have more posts than any year previous on this blog. I was at uni in 2010 too, so most of the work being posted was uni project stuff. This year, most of the work here is personal digital sketching, and looking back the growth is rather awesome. So I'm quietly proud of that.

I'm thinking about taking a short course or 2 next year... Architectural drawing and maybe something theatre set design based maybe?

Quick dragon.

Someone recommended to me starting digital paints with a hard brush to block in areas of colour. So I gave it a go... and I kinda like it. Might refine it, not sure. Referenced from this photo of Huangshan mountain range in China.

Vegeta sketch from a few days back. Was struggling with the hands, even with references. Not sure why.

Some people practise, drawn from reference photos in deviantArt's stock image section. I struggle with standing characters, they get increasingly out of proportion the further down the body I do. I think the same issues are prob present in other poses, it's just doesn't stand out so much? Could be wrong.

Speedpaint from photo ref. I don't do many digital paints from reference and the few I attempt I usually delete. I struggle to understand how to construct them and layer colours I guess. But here's a cave that is half decent. Need to do them more often.
