Couple of theming concepts before I forget them...

The first is for a turtle themed Zamperla Disk-O. I wonder if it's possible to put some kind of tunnel around part of them? It would have to have a huge envelope to allow the wide spinning car through without risk. I wanna explore this one more because I think there's lots of visual possibilities like tiki, reefs, beaches, huts, etc.

the lower one is that derelict themed self representational wooden coaster I keep going back to but am terrified of working on.

Pencil environments from photo references. Top two are Haungshan mountain in China, bottom is an American barn yard.

Pencil sketches of Goku and Vegeta. I rather like these...

Boring muscular studies... Might post something more interesting later on. :)

Monday 27 January 2014

Just a couple of observational drawings from photos. I need to be doing this more often.

Freehand. Not too concerned with getting the perspective right, I'm more just searching for familiarity with man made shapes and creating spaces and understanding how things sit in space. Though I should really be studying perspective too. So much to think about.

Saturday 25 January 2014

Went into the British museum today with some uni friends. Forced myself to draw.

These are pretty atrocious.

I need to do this more often. This is unacceptable.

Just pretend this isn't here. I'm posting it as a kick up the arse.

Thinking about doing an Arrow 10 year anniversay picture. Sketched this the other day...

I can't think of anything fun or creative though. But this came out nice.

Arrow the Porcupine is the unofficial character I designed to fit into the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. I first drew him 10 years ago this February.

Been busy with freelance work today, which is great. :)

Monday 20 January 2014

Armadillo character design I'm working on with a friend.

Armadillos are surprisingly difficult to anthropomorphise. I like his hair a lot.

 More Vegeta. Sorry.

I was going for a post battle image, with tattered gloves and spandex that now needs throwing away and wounds that should probably get treated. I imagined this was, like every battle of Vegeta's, one he lost, or rather one he couldn't win without Goku. So he's pissed off that despite his best efforts, he's still come home to Capsule Corp in this state. He's pulling his gloves off. Why he's looking at you whilst he does it I don't know - in fact he'd probably look better if he was looking at what he was doing. It kinda implies something very different, then. Maybe I'll change it before I post this elsewhere.

This was the sketch. Originally his hair was huge, in the finished picture it's probably too small. Can't win.

Also I had so much trouble with his butt. Hid it in the darkness in the end.

Friday 17 January 2014

A returning customer ordered their third t-shirt from me. I made a similar one to this last year. It's the skeleton of a Giganotosaurus, painted using bleach.

I actually tried to film this one with my new Go Pro but it was kinda too dark to really see. I need to get a daylight lamp - I've wanted one for a while both for art and health, and it would be good for my pet birds also. :)

If you're interested in commissioning a similar shirt, get in touch at joeyfells at gmail dot com :)

Wednesday 15 January 2014

I liked this guy until I couldn't work out where his feet would end up.

Monday 13 January 2014

Found this nice dragon drawing in a sketchbook and assumed I'd scanned it ages ago and thought it would be cool to try colouring it.

But all I did was ruin a nice drawing.

In seriousness, I might work on this some more I dunno. It's just a dragon. I draw millions of them. I've got to stop being scared of ruining art and just get on with it.

But it was stupid to think I could just pick up watercolours and make them work without trying when I ain't touched them in months.

I had a super lazy day today in bed but now my bed is covered in pencil shavings and eraser rubbings. Lmao. It's like the good old days.

These are some of the better drawings. The rest were embarrassingly bad. It's rare I'm embarrassed enough to not post something on here, I'm usually pretty objective about this blog being a personal documentation of progress and the like. That's why I'm trying to write a little more when I post art too, so I can look back in embarrassment at the stuff I tell you guys.

I've never drawn Bulma or Gohan before and yet they look better than the Veggie sketches. I think I need to go back to looking at references when I draw Vegeta cuz something is amiss.

Sunday 12 January 2014

Today has been insainly stressful. My router died. It was like 10 years old. I can't even remember the last time I had internet issues, so I guess I was due one. It's funny, realising how much I rely on the internet. Either way, sorted now, phew.

I did these headshots of Vegeta and Goku yesterday. I don't know how I feel about them. I think Goku looks pretty damn good, especially given how infrequently I've draw him. But Vegeta's face is just wrong and I can't place why. Looking at it now, his eyes are squiffy, but I don't think that's all. I think his skin tone is just wrong too. Maybe I over worked it I don't know anymore. Is his jaw too low too?

I remember as a kid my dad being like "all the characters look the same" and yeah he had a point. So this was an exercising in finding their minor differences and exaggerating them stylistically.

Friday 10 January 2014

Some sketches of Goku. They're not great but art is a process yada yada.

Thursday 9 January 2014

I haven't worked on this in ages, but I thought I should show where I left off in hopes it'll encourage me to work on it some more.

As if lol.

Tuesday 7 January 2014

Some time in early December I think it was, someone got in touch with me via email with a really interesting t-shirt commission request.

At the time I was super busy, but said that in the new year I could work on it. Their idea was a tunnel - which not only works great with the bleached colour you get from a black shirt, this grungy rusty orange, but a few years ago I painted a tonnes of similar tunnels in various media. Okay more than a few. I'm old. I get it.

It turned out pretty cool. I used freezer paper to block off some areas at first, later removing it to work on those. Hadn't done anything like that before.
Arrow the Porcupine!

He'll be 10 this year. Seriously cannot believe that ten years ago I first drew this guy and posted him on deviantArt. Like, seriously, ten years ago. A decade ago. I'm old.
Sorry for the crappy photo but here are some stickers I made this evening!

Super Sonic from Fleetway Sonic the Comic, Buu from Dragon Ball Z and Squad from the Walibi parks. :)

Wanted to do something wintery and play with brush marks. Scrawled this digitally yesterday.
