Been looking at a lot of Ralph Steadman's work. I desperately wanted to do scruffy, splatty ink drawings - but I didn't have a lot of ink and my ink nibs where at uni. Buu. :(

So I used coffee, ink and cut the tip of a straw like a pen nib... and experimented a bit. The straw turned out to be pretty cool, because it was so messy and allowed me to blow ink/coffee around and stuff.

Must get some inks.

Observational drawings.

This man was REALLY grumpy...

And this man was picking his nose and eating it. =/
Some work from a project called "Imaginary World" from last semester.

I am beyond appalling at 3D work, but even worse at drawing plans for 3D work.

I decided that if I had any hope in hell of solving a few scale problems from the Haroun set design, I needed to make a model.

Our brief stated that we were not expected to produce wonderfully intricate working sets, but that our lecturers would be more interested in the concepts. Early on we established that light and dark/good and evil/yin and yang type concepts were key here. Much of the story is set on a moon, one half is always daylight the other always night. The sea is a big thing in this book, too. It's made up of different coloured streams which are the streams of stories. Each colour is a different story, etc. Because the book is set in... well, not India, but it easily could be a parallel of modern India - we liked the idea of using Indian fabrics, which I got hold of at an tailoring shop nearby. The disk turns, to change the scene from one half of the moon to the other.

This is the cover to my "from page to stage" project for uni... In which we have to create designs for a theatre production based on a book... The set, characters, etc. We didn't' have to make a title page, but I picked up a free booklet at some London theatre of poncy bullshit that had some nice photos in it. I had recently finished an essay which covered a lot of crap about pop-art collages. So, I wanted to make a collage of some sort. This happened... Acrylic and collage. I did a lot of it on Christmas day, as Christmas day was pretty dull this year.

These are just photos of the shadow made by water ripples that I took. The weird arrangement is because this is how i printed them. I thought they were cool. This is for the theatre project. I want to project water ripples onto the set, somehow.

And here's Arrow, in flat colours. I know the quality is bad, it's not finished... it doesn't need to be saved as a png. Aside that, the common recolourers abilities are nulled by fuzzy edges, so hahahaa!

TADAAAA!

Sorry about the watermark. You can guarantee someone will try to colour it for me if I don't. I did this in Illustrator.

Now I really, really, really must do some uni work.

This is from the other day and it's terrible. MOVING ON.

Close-up of Iff's face because I thought it was going considerably well for me and my lacking abilities to draw humanoids.

This was me establishing that I'd forgotten how to draw Sonic styled characters last night whilst high on caffeine and getting angry with my inability to draw hands (or anything, for that matter, as it's all bollocks...)

But it's quite interesting to note that today, not high on caffeine, things are rather different...
On the left is Saffron who is this guy's Sonic 'verse character. And on the right is Arrow, of course. Both were sketched in Photoshop. The red linework is me battling with my arch nemesis, Adobe Illustrator... But it's coming out okay. The chance of me finishing it, as we well know by now, is slim... But all the while I have a project for uni that I should be doing, distractions that seem productive are appealing. So we shall see.

This wasn't going at all how I imagined. It was supposed to be Mali the water gardener from Haroun and the Sea of Stories, but frankly it bares no similarities to my mental image. Moving on.

This is an old dragon sketch I started to colour. You may regonise it.
I have a new camera, so I've bee running around testing it and taking endless photos of textures.

Update on the creature.

Battersea Power Station, fiddling with rectangular brushes and straight lines. The reference photo is my own.

This is for uni. It's a scene from Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie. Haroun and Iff the Water Genie are riding the giant mechanical Hoopoe bird across the Ocean of the Streams of Stories at high speed.

Clearly need to do more enviroments from observation before I even consider another one off the top of my head.

...both photoshop.
